Adoption Rate Of New Styles Of K-12 Teaching

This is an infographic based on a survey conducted by Enterasys Network to better understand how rapidly schools are adopting to the new teaching styles and technology tools.

Key points :
21% schools are currently using digital text books and 36.5% plan to use them within a year, but 42.5% schools have no plans to make any move in this direction. (This really surprised me.)

Less than half of schools feel that their network infrastructure is adequate to handle the demands of video content in the classroom.

84% of the schools say that they are able to monitor students network and online activity, which is really amazing.

94% of schools are already using online assessments and testing or plan to use these within 12 months. However 15% find the shift to online assessment would be impossible or difficult.

20.9% of schools are already trying to incorporate Flipped Classroom model in teaching, while another 22.1% of schools plan to try the flipped classroom within 12 months. But only 12.8 % of school say that their school’s current information technology infrastructure is equipped to fully adopt a flipped classroom model.

More than half of schools are currently using or plan to use social media for teaching purposes.

I was really surprised by the facts and  figures shown in the infographic! Do they surprise you too???

The Future Will Not Be Multiple Choice

This is a facinatingly awesome TED Talk by creative genius Drew Davies and educator Jaime McGrath on how to make education relevant, engaging and powerful enough to kindle the fire of imagination and creativity. They talk about how learning is deeper and fun when students are freed from the traditional approaches to learning, that were found to be good for the industrial age system of its time, but in the 21st century those approaches have no place or value. We need to prepare designers who can be ready to face all the challenges of the world and for that we need to inculcate the skills of creative thinking, problem-solving that students will need to thrive in and shape their future.

It is the skill that is very important for our students to posses in-order to seamlessly blend in the job’s which don’t even exist today. It is very important for us, as educators, to understand the components of this set of skill so that we can fully focus on them in our classroom, while teaching.

Teaching kids how to think critically should be an integral part of our teaching approach. But why are we stressing so much on developing critical thinking skills in our students?

It is because:

Memorizing is not learning

To think is to learn

If you think poorly, you will learn poorly

Thinking gives us a wider perspective about things

Thinking gives us the power to reflect and monitor his own learning

Thinking gives us the power to express our well supported thoughts and opinions

Thinking helps to uncover biases and prejudices

It is a path to freedom of expression

Thinking enable us to differentiate between facts and opinions

Thinking gives us the courage to say “I don’t know” and thus help us to be ready to learn and modify our existing opinions.

Thinking enable us to make assertion based on logic and evidence.

Thinking gives us the ability to engage in reflective and independent thinking

Thinking helps us to evaluate and improve our creative ideas.

Help me to thrive!!

 

We, as teachers, need to remember that children need love and support to thrive. We have to believe in them and guide them in every possible way, motivating them at times when they are low, and appreciating them when they do something good. Children just need us to hold their hands and tell them that they are special. They need us to make them realize that they can make a difference.

There is so much that I learned from the story. I don’t have words to describe the emotional turmoil I am going through right now. I just have a question –

Don’t you have bigger dreams!!

This video reminded me that I choose to be a teacher to make a difference in the lives of my students, to do good things and make a positive impact on the society as a whole.

But, I guess, these things can be really difficult to achieve if a student comes from a family with financial problems or is at risk.

The term at-risk is used for students who are likely to fail in school or in life because of their life’s social circumstances. It is not that any one single factor places a student at-risk. Rather, when more than one factor is present, there is a compounding effect and  the results can be move devastating. Poverty is considered to be a major at-risk factor.

We, as teachers, are required to keep our senses alerted at all times to able to identify, and understand children who are at-risk. Identifying them is critical if we are to support their growth and development. This can be easily done by developing warn and caring relationships with students, which will help us to know the student inside out along with the problems faced by them in and out of school.

Teachers can really support the students at risk to succeed in school by conveying the feeling that they really matter, as an individual. It is the job of a teacher to discover their talents and help them realize their true potential. This will not only boost their confidence level, but also motivate them to do well.

We should always remember that students at risk have a hard time succeeding in school. The results of their struggle often are drop out of school. But we as teachers should never give up on such students. Instead we should make every possible effort to educate them and help them dream big.

Just let them know you are there for them at all times and see what difference your words can make!

Just show them the right path and rest will fall in place itself!

Dear Stress…Lets break up!

Today, I came across a POSITIVE TEACHER PLEDGE shared by the Positive School website.

Each and every line of the pledge resonated with me. Teaching is a stressful job, and every now and then we find ourselves trapped into the stress of completing curriculum, making students perform, grading assignments, planning and many other things. If we let stress dominate us it would only make our job more difficult, and our negative attitude will make students uncomfortable in our presence.

We need to overcome the stress, which not only hampers the environment of class but also make students insecure. Creating a safe, accepting environment, where each student is free to experiment and learn in order to grow and change, can only be achieved if we as teachers can tackle our stress in a positive way. We should never forget that we are the ones who has to lead, guide, encourage, motivate, manage, discipline, enable and support our students every single second and we cannot let stress jeopardize all of this.

We all talk about making learning more effective by engaging each and every student in the class, but how do we make every student to participate. Some students talk and share their thoughts so easily while others are too shy of hesitant to even say a word. Sometimes we may even find students losing focus in the middle of the class thereby losing the valuable learning.

The question is “How to increase student’s participation in the class, so that they feel free to share their thoughts and engage in activities?”
